The annual BIOKDD workshop is an established forum for researchers and practitioners of Biomedical Informatics and Data Mining to explore cutting-edge techniques and to exchange ideas and experiences. BIOKDD has been successfully held in conjunction with SIGKDD for 24 years.
Bioinformatics is the science of managing, mining, and interpreting biological data. Large-scale genome initiatives, together with rapid advances in high-throughput technologies, including microarrays, mass spectrometry, and next-generation sequencing, have driven exponential growth in datasets of DNA, RNA, proteins, metabolites, and compounds. These technologies enable quantitative monitoring of biological activity across diverse cell types, physiological states, and spatiotemporal conditions. The resulting data span multiple organizational levels, from molecular systems to organs, individuals, and populations, creating unprecedented opportunities for knowledge discovery in mechanistic biology, disease diagnosis, therapeutic development, healthcare, and bioengineering.
Despite these unprecedented opportunities, many fundamental problems in Bioinformatics, such as protein structure prediction, gene-environment interaction, and regulatory network mapping, have not been convincingly addressed. Besides these, new technologies such as next-generation sequencing are now producing massive amounts of sequence data; managing, mining, and compressing these data raise challenging issues. Finally, there is a pressing need to use these data coupled with efficient and effective computational techniques to build models of complex biological processes and disease phenotypes. Data mining will be essential in addressing these fundamental problems and developing novel therapeutic/diagnostic/prognostic solutions in the post-genomics era of medicine.
