Biomedical Informatics is the science of managing and interpreting information from biological and clinical data, and data mining plays an essential role in addressing the fundamental problems in Biomedical Informatics. The annual BIOKDD workshop is an established forum for researchers and practitioners of Biomedical Informatics and Data Mining to explore cutting-edge techniques and to exchange ideas and experiences. BIOKDD has been successfully held in conjunction with SIGKDD for 16 years.
The goal of the 17th International Workshop on Data Mining in Bioinformatics (BIOKDD'18) is to encourage KDD researchers to solve the numerous problems and challenges in Biomedical Informatics using Data Mining technologies. To embrace SIGKDD 2018's Data Science for Health day, the workshop will feature the theme of Data Science Meets Biomedical Sciences and Health Informatics. This field focuses on the use popular Big Data frameworks, data visualization, and effective data mining and machine learning approaches for the analysis of large amounts of heterogeneous complex biological and clinical data, together with innovative applications in Bioinformatics and Health Informatics. The key goal is to accelerate the convergence between Data Mining and Biomedical Informatics communities to expedite discoveries in basic biology, medicine and healthcare.
In addition to the traditional full workshop papers where quality ones will be invited to publish in IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (TCBB), we solicit submissions to two new tracks Abstracts and Late-Breaking Research.
The Abstracts track is a perfect place for Bioinformatics researchers and medical informaticians to introduce their preliminary research outcomes to increase research impact and to nurture collaborations. We emphasize research effectiveness on real-world datasets. Submitted abstracts will be peer-reviewed by the program committee to make sure that the content would be of interest to the KDD audience including researchers, practitioners and trainees, and authors of accepted abstracts will be asked to give a poster presentation, with quality ones invited for a 5-minute spotlight presentation.
The Late-Breaking Research track is a perfect place for Bioinformatics researchers and medical informaticians to introduce their published work with exceptionally high practical significance, to further broaden the work's research impact. We require the submission of a published manuscript (at least in arXiv) along with additional supplemental or unpublished data, to highlight the work. Authors of accepted submissions will be asked to give a presentation.
